Complete Removal of IE

I was helping a friend troubleshoot her PC and now need
some help. Here is the story so far. Some ISP software
that was installed modified the browser and left it
unstable. The back button is not operational and almost
every time (may be triggered by trying to access some
java or other applet) two svchost.exe errors occur. I
tried removing the ISP software and there was no change.
I then installed SP4 and all the other Windows updates.
The svchost.exe errors where gone, but the browser back
button and some other minor features where still not
functioning. Decided to fully re-install IE6 from the
web, but the installer tells me that I am not running the
correct version of windows (it suggests that I run
win2000 or later, which is what I am using). After this,
I decided to remove IE6 first, but in order to that, I
had to revert to pre SP4. The IE6 uninstaller is now
available but doesn't execute properly. I decided to
reinstall IE6 again, but still the same error message
(version not correct). To make things worse, I decided
to get the PC back to SP4, and now SP4 is telling me that
the version if windows I am using does not support that
update.

I basically have two questions:
1- How can I completely remove IE6Sp1 so I can fully re-
install it again?
2- Is there a way to fix that win2000, so that when I try
to install SP4 or other software, it correctly identifies
the OS as being win2000?

Thanks for the patience reading my post.

Check the system for "hijackware". It's probably the cause of all these
problems.

I highly recommend using HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) to identify and
assist in the removal of these bad guys. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, not here.**

Also update virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From now on,
do both daily.
