Compile error in hidden module in Excel 2002

Cindy Fairchild

The following pop-up message box appears every time I
open or close Excel 2002: Compile error in hidden module.

I am familiar with Microsoft article 307410. I never had
Adobe Acrobat installed on this computer.

How can I get rid of this annoying message box?

Thanks

Cindy

Cindy,

It sounds like you have a bug in an add-in or your personal.xls file and
that the code has been protected in the add-in or file.

Either 1) try unprotecting all the loaded add-ins if you have the passwords,
which would allow you to try and debug the error, or 2) unload all add-ins,
restart excel, then reload any add-ins you were using one by one and see
which one is causing the error message.

it could be any macro that lives in a workbook that's opened each time excel
opens.

Chip Pearson has some nice notes that can help you find the problem workbook at:
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/StartupErrors.htm

Essentially, you're going to move stuff out of your XLStart folder and uncheck
everything under Tools|Addins. (But keep track!)

Then one by one, you'll add one back and restart excel to see if that caused the
problem.

I should have mentioned this error message is coming up
on a pc where windows xp, sp1 and office xp are fresh
installs after fdisking pc.
Thank you for the information but none of the fixes had
the desired effect. The compile comes up every time I
open and close Excel 2002.

What files were in your XLStart folder?

What addins were checked under Tools|Addins.

Maybe someone will see a problem if they see a name.

Depending on your upgrade path through the different versions of excel, you can
have a few XLStart folders.

Make sure that there are no files in any of those locations.

And if you've double/triple checked this, excel can also start workbooks based
on entries in the windows registry.

But do this first just to verify that you can stop the message.

Close excel and start it in Safe mode:

Windows start button|Run
excel /safe

Did you get the message?

If you're comfortable messing around in the registry:

In xl2002, the registry key is:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Excel\Options
(look for OPEN, OPEN1, OPEN2, etc.)

These have to be in nice consecutive order. So you might have to rename some to
make them consecutive again (after you delete the offending one).

And since you're working in the registry, make sure you back it up before you
start.

If you're nervous poking in there, you could look and report back what you
find. But be careful. Changes to the registry are immediate--there ain't no
"are you sure" prompts.

But I'd really look one more time at the various XLStart folders.
