Compatibility mode saved formatting changes disappear upon reopen

Someone in my company is using Excel 2003-2007 in compatibility mode; when he
is trying to make changes to Excel 2003 files. Some are shared, some are not.

Formatting changes are not saved in compatibility node. I am finding that
when they are saved in the 2007 format, then all the changes are saved when
reopening the file. However, the files need to be saved in compatibility mode
for other reasons and cannot be saved in .xlsx format.

Any clues as to why this might happen and how this problem can be solved?

We are having the same problem. We resaved our .xls files as .xlsx and redid
the formatting. Now we are getting errors that say "too many different cell
formats" in the .xlsx files. I do not think we have more than 4000 cell
formats though, especially since all of the formatting disappeared and we
reformatted. Anyone have any ideas?

We are thinking about buying this software to see if it will fix the problem
but I don't know if it will work.
