Comparisons Antivirus Programs

Thanks Robin.

Avira looks interesting, and I'm wondering whether to try their security
suite when my AVG subscirption expires in October. Has anyone here tried
Avira? It doesn't seem to cost an arm and a leg, either.

AVG no longer seem to operate a very effective 'help' service via email: my
most recent enquiry received an inadequate automatic reply, for instance.
Their help service was a big factor in their favour, for me, so that's quite
a loss. And after all the bother there's been with AVG8, and the conflicting
information they've issued concerning its problems, I feel distinctly uneasy
about where they're going, so maybe it's time to look elsewhere.

I used AVG for over a year, then starting having problems. Seems it doesn't
ATT at all. Hubby and I finally switched to Avast, and so far, 8 months later
are having no problems. We have the free edition. It was recommended to us by
another ATT user who formerly used AVG.

Keeping my fingers crossed. LOL

Hi Guy's, I too have left AVG free and are using Avast Home for a fews months
now. I've used Avast in the past right along side of AVG with no problems
but i've
left AVG for now, it seems to be a little out of control. Ron

have you installed AVG 8.0 yet?
did i give you the manual on how to do it- i thought so
and yes I have tried Aviria free and pro
I like the free but it has a terrible nag screen that pops up in your face
and can be quite annoying
The pro version is only $20 and it works just like AVG 8.0
It is almost a clone of AVG
I have 2 clients on it because AVG just kept crashing when they tried to
open it

I do not like AVAST only because it doesn't do scheduled scans and none of
my clients are going to do scans of their own. Also the user interphase is
very complicated for the average user

Again if AVG doesn't work on one of my clients computers I put Avira on it
instead

No, I'm still on AVG 7.5, Robin. Whatever I decide to do, I'm looking for a
complete security suite - I've very much liked the simplicity of the AVG 7.5
complete bundle and it suits me very well. Avira does a complete security
suite which doesn't cost the earth, so it's an attractive proposition, and
of course wouldn't have the popup screen problem you mention.

AVG did eventually reply to my enquiries about switching to AVG8 - received
just hours after posting my comment here, in fact - but I'm still uneasy
about doing it. They seem disturbingly conscious that problems are likely to
occur during the process! Curiously, they recommend installing 8 straight on
top of 7.5, and NOT uninstalling 7.5 separately first - what do you think
about that, Robin? Do you have any experience of people trying that?

I do NOT recommend installing it ontop of 7.5
I recommend you uninstalling 7.5 first then put AVG 8 on
as in my manual which gives you step by step on how to install it, configure
it and use it
I recommend you not putting on the tool bar
My recommendation is to try it- you might be very surprised.
If you do decide not to do it- I still do not recommend "suites"
too many problems with a suite
and very hard to uninstall because they leave stuff
Since you have the AVG suite already- putting on 8.0 should not be a problem
but if you want to go to another antivirus program when yours expires than
do a stand a lone
Note that All of them have problems on different computers.
Everyone runs different programs and you never know when there is going to
be some kind of conflict- it is the nature of the beast.
The clients that I have who run the free AVG8.0 (and I have over 100 on it)
only 2 had a problem with AVG 8.0 free. the problem is that when they try to
open the icon- it crashes but the program still works. Of course this is
not good because you have no idea when it did scans, updates or even if you
have a virus.
Those 2 (after testing Avira free for 2mths on my test machine) I purchase
Avira premium for them (antivirus and antispyware only) which costs $26-
give or take). I did not go with the free only because it has this terrible
nag screen to purchase the product which is real annoying. It looks and
feels just like AVG and it actually has a higher rating of getting rid of
virus, trojans and rootkits than AVG.
I did not go with the premium Plus which has firewall in it because I do not
like a third party firewall program for those who are not technically
inclined. I have found clients that claim they cannot get to the internet
and after figuring out that they blocked certain files of windows that
actually needed to go out- couldn't and that turned out to be the problem.
Taking them off the blocked list- and Whalla!!! Internet access.

Most people have not a clue what to allow or dissallow and xp or vista
firewall is more than enough. and if you are real anal you can get yourself
a router which has a built in firewall so if xp or vista's firewall failed
for some reason you are still protected.

Getting an antivirus program and Superantispyware pro (that one I highly
recommend- only because you can set it to do scheduled scans instead of the
free version where you have to do a manual scan) and most will tend to
forget to do the scan) is more than enough for residential protection.
Having Windows Defender is also a plus as a backup and I have spywareblaster
also. Just make sure you set all these scans on all the programs on
differnt times and give them at least 2hrs between scans. I set them up for
a weekly scan (WD, AV) and Superantispyware Pro as a daily scan but I make
sure they are 2hrs between each scan so they do not conflict with each
other.

That's what I thought you'd say Robin, and those are my thoughts too. Yet
this IS the official AVG advice on how to do it, which seems odd to me,
unless they have an extra-cleaver uninstaller built into AVG8. If they have,
that might be why they recommend doing it, 'over the top'. (I remember there
was an update a while back which related to 'AVG7.5 conversion to AVG8' -
that might have something to do with it.)

Yep. Wouldn't touch it.

I shall, though I shall do so with my heart in my mouth!
If you do decide not to do it- I still do not recommend "suites"

I've been using this suite for 2 years now, Robin, and it's served me very
well.

I suppose I shall see what happens - though if I uninstall 7.5 first, I
guess that's where the problems may arise regardless of what happens next.

I'm perfectly happy with this process - remember I've been using the AVG
firewall for 2 years, and I'm happy about making those decisions.
Getting an antivirus program and Superantispyware pro

I have a good arsenal already, Robin - I have Spywareblaster, and the MVPS
hosts file, and regular scans with SAS Free and a-squared, with Defender
running in the background in addition to AVG, seem to have looked after me
pretty well so far.

I'll let you know how I go on.....

Vague recollection is that AVG does have an uninstall as part of
the the install. That's pretty common these days with security apps.

yes it does but I beta tested the many versions of AVG 8.0 before it came
out to the public and found that uninstalling the program first made a much
happier computer, then letting AVG 8.0 uninstall it as per my experiences
and the many in the private forum for AVG did too
