When I've used compare documents before, and shown the original and the new
version, all the alterations in the new document appeared in a panel on the
left hand side, and the changes were tracked in the usual way so i could see
every change. Now I can't see that panel or the changes that have been made.
Can someone tell me how I get this panel back?

To get the reviewing pane--which it sounds like is what you want, click the
Reviewing Pane button in the Tracking section of the Review tab in the
ribbon. If the balloons are displaying and consume too much real estate,
click the Balloons tool in the Tracking section to control balloon display.

Are you referring to the Tri-Pane Review Panel? The one that shows the
Compared Result, the Original, and the Revised documents? If so, on the
Review tab, click "Show Source Documents" and then click "Show Both".
