Compare says document already has changes

Hi,

When comparing 2 documents for the 2nd time, I get a message that says:

"The new document already has changes. Word may ignore some existing
changes. Compare anyway?"

I never get this the first time the 2 documents are compared. Can someone
tell me why this message comes up and if there is a way around it? I have
renamed and moved files trying to fool Word, but nothing works. I am using
Word 97.

Thanks,
Val

I've encountered this message myself in Word 97 and to be perfectly
honest, I'm 100% why this occurs.

I suspect the first time you compare documents internal indicator is
added to the document that tells Word the document was previously
compared and this triggers the message even though there are no
changes to be ignored.

I do know this behavior doesn't occur in Word 2002/2003 since they
revised the Track Changes feature.
