compact flash... am I in the right group?

I didn't receive an answer to the follow message I'd previously posted. Is
there perhaps a more appropriate group in which to post this? Any direction
is appreciated!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have a compact flash drive and card from which I load digital pics. It (XP
Pro sp2) used to read the card just fine. But over the last couple of days I
worked with XP tech support to uninstall and reinstall sp2 ... long story.
Now none of the 3 USB ports on my machine will read this. This is what
occurs when I plug in the reader:

1. Shows the "found new hardware" and prompts to install software for the
USB mass storage device.

2. I click to install automatically (first couple of times without OS disc,
second couple of times with it).

3. It searches, and each time an installation window appears stating that
the software has not passed the Windows logo testing to verify its
compatibility and offers two buttons: "continue anyway" or "stop
installation."

4. Stop installation is obvious. Continue anyway, searches, attempts to
install, then produces another window stating that it cannot install this
hardware.

5. I've tried going into device manager and updating drives and reinstalling
the driver, all with the same outcome.

What gives? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Dean

Dean , wrong group I know , but if you post this in the windows 98
group and Shep© is there , he will probably help .

Yes to both questions.

I'm able to load on the pics on a second computer. And my computer's usb's
work fine for all other hardware.

Check this: another possibly related issue is that the window that would
normally auto open for my cd burner doesn't come up either... the one that
recognizes the drive and asks "what do you want to do" ya know, then prompts
with open folder, copy, etc. That's what should happen for my CF drive as
well.

Hmm,

Thanks for your response.

Because Shep© will answer questions about XP although I haven`t seen
him here in a while .

Does the device work on other comuters?
Do other USB drives work on your computer?

Is it a single slot USB cardreader? Then it's strange that
XP asks for driver at all while it does not for other USB
drives.

That the autorun stuff doesn't work can be caused by the
autorun settings. With my little tool 'AutoRunSettings'
you can set them back to default:
http://www.uwe-sieber.de/files/autorunsettings.zip

For both, 'all users' and 'current user' click the
'delete setting' buttons if enabled. This sets back
all to XP default. For CD/DVD the 'insert notification'
should be active.

WOW!! It worked, both for the cd and for the flash drive!!! Way cool!!!!

Thank you for getting back to me on this! I appreciate your diligence.
