Comments - Spell Checking?

I don't know comments very well in a Word document. Is there a way to spell
check them? It doesn't appear that spell check, when ran with the document
itself, picks any misspelling up....

Thank you!

Word should spell check text in comments as well. Check if the Comment Text
style has been formatted with "Do not check spelling or grammar" and clear
the setting (if necessary). If you want specific instructions, tell me your
version of Word.

In the Styles & Formatting task pane, choose Custom, which opens the Format
Settings dialog. In that dialog, click Styles... to get a complete list (not
all styles are listed in the task pane even when you select All Styles).
Select Comment Text, then Modify. In the Modify Style dialog, click Format,
then Language, to see what the current settings are and change them if
necessary.

side note--

Did you let spell-check run all the way? Word probably checks the main
text, and then goes back and checks the comments--Word does *not*
spell-check page by page, so it may appear to be skipping comments that
it will get to later. (This is the behavior with footnotes--I've not
tested it with comments, but I suspect Word does the same)

I ran spell check all the way and it doesn't pick up the misspellings...

I've tried doing what the above posted told me, but then it just changes the
font, etc and I can't get it to work...*sigh*

Instead of changing the font for Comments, did you try changing the Language
settings (making sure that "Do not check spelling or grammar" was not
checked)?

Yes...that's what I was doing. I followed your directions and when I hit
"Apply" it changes the font of the paragraph that I happen to be on. Even if
I don't hit apply, it still won't spell check....and I can't get it to spell
check the comments...very frustrating!

It sounds to me as if you are applying the Comment Text style to a paragraph
in a different style. When you click OK to accept changes in the Modify
Style dialog, you should be returned to the Style dialog, where you have a
choice of Apply or Close. Close is adequate.

But I can confirm that neither Comment Text nor Balloon Text is by default
formatted as "Do not check spelling or grammar" (although "Detect language
automatically" is checked and disabled).
