COMCTL32.OCX - Required or not...??

Jeremy

I would be grateful if some kind expert out there would
answer a simple question for me:

Is COMCTL32.OCX installed by or required by Windows XP
Pro?

Reason for asking is an app I installed recently and then
uninstalled, wanted to remove it...I decided to keep it.
I suspect the app installed it in the first place and
that my Registry scanner is correct in reporting that
there are no other dependencies on this file. But I want
to be sure. If Windows XP Pro (recently re-installed)
didn't install it then I'm happy to lose it.

Many Thanks.

The easy way to determine if it's required is to rename it and see if
anything else has a problem. If not, delete it.

Ok, thanks - understood. But is my assumption that this
is an 'out-dated' file that is no longer actually
installed by Windows (specifically XP Pro) correct?

Thanks again.

If you look in the Microsoft DLL Database
(http://support.microsoft.com/servicedesks/fileversion/moreinfo.asp?Id=284882),
the file is distributed with W2K and WXP. But I believe what is
happening is Office XP and 03 are removing it!

Microsoft had candidly (spitefully;-) admitted this in a KB article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;295351.
However, the article has disappeared without trace in the last couple
of months! (To make matters worse, if you go looking to download
comctl32.ocx anywhere on the Microsoft site, the only one I found
still available - by accident or design = is a pre-V6 version.)

Bottom line is that if you're a VB6 developer and have a dependency on
this file, you better consider distributing it or making it available
to users of your program.
