Combo Security

Hi,

I need to install the front end on a users machine but i want to ensure i
have taken the most efficient steps to lock down the front end to prevent any
toying with it.Now my question, is it possible to install the front end by
first converting it to MDE then applying the access user level security
through the wizard, then applying the disable shift key code from Albert D.
Kallal.I am usure if in that order or if these steps can be done
together?Please advise...

The order should be

1. Secure it (there may be more to it than running the wizard). Study the
FAQ, and follow the steps outlined.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=207793 I've also outlined the detailed
steps at
www.jmwild.com/AccessSecurity.htm

2. Split it (don't use the splitter wizard). Steps at
http://www.jmwild.com/SplitSecure.htm
Put the backend on the server, along with your secure workgroup file.

3. Create an MDE from the frontend. Keep the mdb should you ever need to
make changes. Once you've completed changes, you'd create the mde again and
redistribute it. Tony Toews has a utility to automate this. See
http://www.granite.ab.ca/access/autofe.htm

4. Disable the shiftkey in the MDE and put it on each user's workstation.
See
http://www.mvps.org/access/modules/mdl0011.htm
and
http://www.mvps.org/access/general/gen0040.htm

You don't want to create the mde first and then secure it, because any
future changes would require that you go to the original mdb. You'd have to
redo security each time.

Thanks John,

The DB is already working fine in the FE/BE design. My question is directed
solely on the front end.
1)Secure it with user level authority.
2)Create mde which now has the user level authority.
3)Disable the shift key before installing on the users desktop.
The only thing i left out was Tony Toews utility since i have not tried it
and do not know how difficult to install in a network enviorment. Is the above
correct?????
Thanks for your great support....

Yes. You should have no difficulty getting Tony's utility to work in a
network environment - read the instructions on it.
