I have the same problem as a number of posters. I need to create a TOC,
TOTables and TOFigures composed of 30/40 chapters created by multiple authors
and of at least 1500+ in total size.

Simply cutting and pasting did not work as my computer couldn't handle the
document size. I tried the Master doc option, and whether it was the
corruption issue or not, I could not adequately control the heading numbers.
Especially since it is necessary to use a 5.0.1 series of numbers which are
not standard.

I found the explanation on using the RD method and attempted it. I created a
new doucment using the title, signature, and TOC pages only. I got the ALT/F9
text to insert, then hit CTL/F9. However, I cannot type anything in the
brackets after hitting CTL/F9. I type in the RD and it all disappears,
including the brackets. I'm stuck there.

The version of Word is Office Professional 2003.

Hi MoGH,

The disappearing act is probably due to the fact that RD fields are hidden. Have you tried updating the ToC or doing a print preview
after inserting the RD field (with the path to the source document)?

Cheers

I tried this suggestion and while it didn't solve the overall problem, it did
allow me to see the {RD \f} field and type in to it. So I was able to create
the TOC.
