Com ports

I have several applications that when I attempt to start
I get a sequence of 16 bit application errors trying to
find com2 then com3 then com4 ports which are not there.
This is followed by an shell.dll error. Any ideas. I am
running XP and at least one of the applications was
written for XP. Thanks!

And the applications are???

Also, were these applications designed for XP, 9x, DOS?

Thanks for the response...

The programs that fail include...
. The Earth Centered Universe 4.0(Nova-astro.com)
vendor upgraded for XP
. The Ultimate Birder (National Audubon) vendor upgraded
for XP got the error during the build
. Chronicle Encylopedia of History (DK Multimedia)
Windows 95 (got the error during the build.
. Misc others (games etc.)
Since the vendors are small and they do not see the
errors elsewhere they just blow me off.

If these applications were originally for Windows 9x, it's likely there's
some DOS code that is the source of the issue, especially with the Windows
95 game. In all cases, you should contact the vendor or visit their
websites and check for known issues as often these can be resolved with such
information. If that fails, you should contact the app's tech support.
