column heading, merge, new line.

I was looking at a template column heading and wonder how folks merge cells
together so that I type text just like in word with the ease of new line.
When I merge multiple cells, it gives me a warning message "The selection
contains multiple data values. Merging into one cell willl keep the
upper-left most data only. What did I do wrong? How do I fix it?

Thanks

Merging cells does not merge the data contained in those cells, therefore you
can only merge empty cells or a range with only one cell containing data.
You will need to move the cells with data to another place to allow merging
of those cells. Also, to merge "lines" of cells you will need to do each
line independently. Trying to merge multiple lines will result in one large
cell. Use the Format>Cells>Text control to merge the selected cells, and the
Text alignment options to center or justify your text left or right, top or
bottom.
