Did you download a graphics driver rather than a Windows
update?

Open device manager and roll-back the driver.

I have also noticed problems with the color pallette. A
lot of the colors are not showing as they should do. EG
indigo shows as black
In some applications I only get about 10 different colors
for the pallette of 50 odd.
Obviously something has corrupted the windows file
controlling this, but I am not sure how to correct it.

OK, let's take this slowly: I am not at your house looking at your
computer and my crystal ball isn't working. If you want help, provide
the details as requested. Are the incorrect colors in the Windows
installation itself and all applications or just in one application? If
the latter, what is the application? Generic troubleshooting would be
for you to update your video drivers.
