Color & Recurring Meetings

We have admins managing multiple calendars in Outlook 2007. They are looking
for an easier way to update recurring meetings which have color categories.
If the entire meeting series has a color assigned and they update one
instance of the meeting, they cannot remove the assigned color unless they
change the ENTIRE meeting series. They are stuck with updating the meeting
series again after they update the one instance. Is there an easier/more
elegant solution to this issue? Thanks!

colors are an all or nothing deal with recurrences you can't assign one
color to one recurrence and not to all of the recurrences

Yes but... Outlook 2003 didn't have this problem.

In Outlook 2003, you could set up a recurring calendar item - obviously
saves time over setting up individual calendar events - and tag the series
with a colored-coded category. THEN, you could open up each instance of a
recurrence and change the category color.

Sounds rather idiosyncratic but... I relied heavily on this functionality in
my small business. I'd set up A-B-C-D series with a color like 'important'.
Date A would arrive and I'd know I needed to follow up with Person 1. Once
that communication was satisfied, I could change the category color to 'none'
which told me that the matter was resolved. Date B would arrive, and I'd
repeat the process.

It was one of the many little ways I used Outlook's calendar function as a
running to-do list (more than Tasks, I must admit).

Now I see Outlook 2007 has consolidated the category functions across
Calendar, Contacts, Tasks, etc, dramatically expanding the category choices -
which is great. So, with one hand they giveth and with the other they taketh
away. Not cool. I want a patch!

No, you changed the label, not the category. In Outlook 2003, colors were
associated with labels, not categories. The label is an attribute that can
be changed for an occurrance. Categories, in either Outlook 2003 or 2007,
cannot be changed per-occurrance. Since colors in Outlok 2007 are connected
to the categories, they can not be changed in that version. The behavior
for categories is consistent between the two versions.

What was the solution or was there ever one. My boss uses reoccuring meetings. When the meeting is finished he likes to change the color to a different color that signifies that the meeting has taken place. I found you could delet the meeting but because he has another PC with office 2003 on it and uses the color codes on that calander he COULD change the color on individual meetings in a reoccuring meeting. If I need to make lables and assign colors to them how would I do that. Or, is this just something one will have to adapt to as the options have changed from Office 2003 to 2007?

No, outlook 2003 didn't have category colors, so you couldn't change it. It
had colored labels.
