I have a computer with onboard LAN runnig Win XP Pro. The network admin said
that all I had to do was hook up the computer to the wall socket. I tried
this, and behold, it did not work. I have an invalid IP address according to
my pc. my computer is not recognized on the network, and the network is not
recognized on the PC. Help anyone?

I just set my daughter up on the network at her school and all we had to was
use DHCP. Maybe you should try that. You also probably need a account and
password for the school network. Contact someone at the school for that.

Remove the IP address and set everything in the TCP/IP settings
to automatic. Remove everything including standard gateway, DNS
server etc.

Then try again.

In TCP/IP Properties (Network Connections - Local Area Connection - Properties -
TCP/IP - Properties) is the computer set to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
and "Obtain DNS server address automatically"?

Open a command window (Start - Run - "cmd"). Type the following commands:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Next check ipconfig information for the computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, copy and paste into your next post.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.
