Codes Showing through in Browser

G

Gail Dennis

I'm trying to make some changes in an .asp page and when I do the codes at
the top of the page shows through in the IE 6. Below is the code for the
particular page I'm working on. This page was created by my web designer and
I'm trying to update it myself using FP 2003. Any help would be appreciated.
I've even tried just saving the page before I make any changes and it does
the same thing. I can't figure out how to get FP 2003 to stop scrambling
with the original code. Thanks for taking time to look at this for me!

Help! I was hoping to hear something by now on this problem. Is it a
difficult one to solve? Should I contact Microsoft on this one? Any advice
will be appreciated. Thanks!

Not many people are going to wade thru your code to find the needle in the haystack
If the page is published provide a URL
- often easier to find errors in an online page

IMHO
The page is poorly coded since it mixes Html and ASP continuously, so you are going to have a hard time separating the 2
The ASP should be valid stand alone Html - not intertwined w/ your html
(opening a tag in ASP and closing it in Html is usually asking for trouble)

The page is poorly coded since it mixes Html and ASP continuously, so you
are going to have a hard time separating the 2

How do you avoid mixing HTML and ASP? Example
<p>the date today is <%=date()%></p>
what would you do instead and why?

I think he means starting a piece of mark-up in html and finishing it in
..asp.

The whole html block
<p> ...your variable here </p>
should be generated by ASP

You don't avoid it. You attentuate it. In other words, for example, you
should avoid having a lot of logic in your HTML. Instead, the logic should
(for the most part) reside in your code above the HTML, in functions and
subs. An example such as you posted is the best you can get in that case.

Initial problem was code showing thru in browser
- suspected cause was mismatch between html tags and ASP "tags" as parsed by FP during a save

IMHO
If user knows what they are doing they can do "anything",
- but if they are not sure, keeping them separate makes debugging easier and keeps FP from trying to fix what it sees as bad html

| Why (assuming a win2k server)?
