Codec error???

Hi
I've been trying to get wmm to work for ages but nothing ever seems to work
I have XP Home
whenever I try to import an avi clip it says:

The file C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\Kylie\Rurouni Kenshin
- 12.avi cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is
not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and
install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to
import the file again.

Where can I download codecs? I'm pretty sure I've downloaded new codecs
before but it was so long ago I can't remember =S

You cannot just blindly start downloading and installing codecs hoping to
get the right one. To do so is inviting disaster.

You first need to determine what codec the clip is encoded in. You can use
Google and search for a useful little app called GSpot Video Appliance. It
puts an icon on your desktop, and you simply drag and drop any video clip
onto the icon and it will analyze the clip and tell you what encoding schema
were used for audio and video tracks. Please be aware that not all audio
and video codecs are compatible with MM2. It is quite possible that you
already have the appropriate codec installed on your computer, but it cannot
integrate with MM@. If this is the case, you will need a third party app
that will transcode the video and audio tracks into formats that MM2 can
utilize.
