code 39???

Can anybody tell me why my cd-rom and dvd-rom drives give
me a message of "Windows cannot load the device driver
for this hardware. The driver may be corrupt or missing
(Code 39)".

It was all working fine a little while ago.

Try searching Google Groups under xp and "code 39". You may get a few hits.

(There are other ways that the bad Registry keys can be created other than
an upgrade installation of XP.)

It can be fixed by manually editing the Registry, or by using a toll:
