Code 10 External USB 2.0 HD

Trying to install a Maxtor 3100 external USB 2.0 HD. Have Xp Home SP2. At
first was getting Unknown Device error. Now after updating chipset drivers,
recopying USBSTOR.SYS, trying everything else under the sun. I am finally
getting the device manager to recognize the drive but fails to install with a
CODE 10 ERROR.

I have read elsewhere that this is a known SP2 problem but have not been
able to confirm on the MS KB. There is a posted hotfix for firewire drives
but not USB.

One posted solution is to change the jumper on the external drive to master.
However, I am not willing to try this as it will void the warranty on this
brand new drive.

The drive works perfectly on other machines (XP pro SP1, Win2000) machines.

Maxtor, like other device manufactures, write their own drivers -- usually
it is not Microsoft who does it. You should contact Maxtor about the
problem. Part of what you paid for is their Customer Support during the
warranty period. Perhaps they have an updated driver since SP2 or since
other Microsoft operating system updates came out. I see over 237 Google
complaints similar to yours. Tell Maxtor that you and those Google article
authors need a fix. The Google query was:
"CODE 10" maxtor external xp

Sorry. You're off the mark here. Maxtor does not make a driver for this
drive. It is the microsoft driver USBSTOR.SYS that should run this drive.
Just like a USB pen drive.

I have looked thru most of those 237 complaints. And will the only
resolution is to crack the case and reset the jumper. Which I am not willing
to do as this will void the warranty.

Does anyone out there who knows what they are talking about have any ideas?

I don't have the answer to your problem but thought I'd toss this in to the
fray: Support for installation issues is usually free from the hardware
manufacturers. Have you tried their tech support or checked their site for
any SP2 caveats for this device?
