cntrl key/click select auto copying

I just built my own computer, and everything is working just fine, however I
have a very weird problem. When I use my control key and the mouse to click
and select multiple files, but not all of them, it automatically begins to
copy them, then it will delete some, and then copy some more, all while I
held the ctrl key down, and click selected say 8 out of 10 files. It does
this for files in one folder, or folders. In one program I use for picture
capturing/editing. I do the same thing with my picture album, while selecting
multiple thumbnails, it will not copy, but it will deselect some, then selct
more, and keep going back and forth. I have to select all that I want
individually, and do whatever. I can't select 8 out of 10. It does something
different with each click.
What I've done:
Specs: XP, MSI motherboard, AMD Athlon 64, 1gb Ram, Asus video card, Seagate
Barracuda HDD, Dynex keyboard, Logitech MX310 mouse.
I've already uninstalled the keyboard and mouse drivers, and just used
windows. I've tried an old mouse, and keyboard. Reinstalled updated drivers.
I don't use many shortcuts, there may be more happening, this is the only
thing I've had go wrong that I can't find an answer to anywhere. I have
checked the click select under the general tab, folder options. It is set to
double click, one click to select. It is not set to hover over it to select
it. I tested this before, by going really slow, as in 2-3 seconds in between
selecting pictures or documents, and it still copied them.
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Are you dragging the files. Ctrl + Drag = Copy. A drag commences if you move the mouse by more than 4 pixels.

Well, I think I said this, but if not, it does this with any file. Word,
excel documents, music file, anything in widows explorer, and then on the
video editing software that I use. I haven't tried it on anything else.
What do you mean moving the mouse by more than 4 pixels? How does this
relate to the documents I mentioned above? As I mentioned, I also tried
click selecting really slow as in 2-3 seconds in between clicking, moving to
another file, then clicking again, to make sure I wasn't dragging, and it
still did it. Sometimes, after I click the second or third time, it will
then display the copies of everything I had just clicked on. So it doesn't
just show the copy after each click.

You moved the mouse more than 4 pixels while selecting (ie just after selecting but you've not yet released the mouse button) a file with the control key held down.

Practise on one file to see what I mean.

So I rephrase

You press down control, you press down left mouse button, you move the mouse 4 pixels, you release the left mouse button. Because of the 4 px move it became a drag operation.

I'm still not sure what you mean. I hold the control key down continually,
click on a file, let go of the mouse, continue holding the control key down,
then move the mouse over to the next file, and click, the same thing. Like
I said, I've waited as long as 2-3 seconds before even moving the mouse.
After I've clicked on that file, or maybe one of the next 2-3 files, it will
eventualy show all the copies it has made of all the files I've clicked on.
What about on my software program, it's not copying there, it simply
re-arranges the order multiple times, and de-selects ones that I've already
selected, instead of just keeping the ones I've selected highlighted. I'll
go and try what you've said, but I'm pretty sure I'm not doing that.

You move the mouse slightly between pressing the left mouse button and releasing it. If control is not held down this moves the file (but as it is to the same place it may move or snap back the screen location of the icon depending on your viewing preferences).

It's not a question of time delay. This is the cause 99.99999% of the time. I just want you to confirm it. Also if you have tremors or were born with two left hands this 4 px setting can be adjusted.

Well, I went to a folder, and held the control button down the entire time.
I moved the mouse over a document, and didn't touch the mouse, except with my
finger to click select. Then I moved it to the next document, did the same
thing, and so on. I did this process 4 times, with 12 documents. Only once
did it autocopy. I think you've got something here. Is 4 pixels not very
much? How can I adjust it? I also just figured something else out. I held
the control button down, and used the arrows to get to them, and used the
space bar to select. I went as fast as I possibly could 4 different times,
and not once did it auto copy. I'm going to try these on that software
program as well, if it doesn't work, I'll let you know.

I guess I'm not nearly as computer literate as you are. What is this, and
where do I go to do this. Laymans terms please.
