replaced the battery in my motherboard, trying to reset the CMOS but when i
get to "primary master" and try to change it from "auto," the page freezes,
including the clock. i am able to change all other settings on this page with
no difficulty.

This is not a Windows XP issue but you should contact the manufacturer
of your computer or motherboard for support.

You need to reset the BIOS with the information about your computer and its
equipment, it sounds like those settings may have been lost/corrupted. I
know this is too late for you now but you really should enter the BIOS
before changing the battery and write the setting down in case they get lost
while changing the battery.
Look in your motherboard manual- it will show how to reset the BIOS- usually
shorting a couple of pins on the motherboard. You'll need to enter the BIOS
info afterwards. The pins may be marked by screen-printing if you don't have
the manual. Be careful not to touch anything else but the pins.

Hi,

You might just leave it set to auto for the primary and secondary IDE
channels and if available set the bios to yes or no for plug and play OS,
selecting "no" for this would let the bios/cmos install things or "yes" let
windows set things up. Xp is a pnp friendly OS so setting the IDE channels to
auto should work fine. It may be that you need to update the bios from the
OEM for the board or the for computer itself ie Dell, HP etc. I have my bios
set to auto, otherwise I would need to know the exact info for HD's and cd
players to set them up manually. In the old days you had to copy the info to
paper in order to have the exact figures, I hope your computer is not that
old.
