CMOS Error Message. Please Help!

Hi,

I have XP Home Edition and recently I reeived the
following wrror message after turning on my computer (the
computer had been turned off for 4 days)"CMOS checksum
error defaults loaded". What does this means and how can
I repair my computer?

Please someone, anyone with knowledge of XP please post,
or email me a step by step solution to this. I am afraid
to turn off my computer for fear that it will never start
up again?

You battery may possibly bad so the Bios reloads the defaults. No harm done
with the defaults but your PC may not run to it's optimum and you will have
to set certain things in the Bios. Also an illegal instruction may have
damage the data in the CMOS so the bios corrected it with the reload.
So, step one, check that the battery is good.

Your computer's CMOS is a special piece of memory where it keeps the
start-up configurtaion (hard drive settings, floppy drive settings, Memory
configuration and DATE/TIME). This CMOS needs a coin-type battery to keep
the configuration when the PC is not powered on. If the CMOS coin-type
battery fails to keep the configuration, you get this message. You will
need to replace the battery or have it done for you.
