cmd not available on windows xp sr 2

I cannot get cmd on windows xp SR 2. get an error message NTVDM CPU illegal
instruction...etc. I am using window xp professional. I cannot find the cmd
file in the windows directory. I need to ping the other computers on my home
network and the computer that gets the error message is not recognized by my
other computers. I do not have a winnt folder on this computer but have an
windows folder. The other computers that have SR1 have an Wnnt folder where
the cmd resides. I moved the cmd folder to the system 32 directory and
still get the same error message.
Should I have a Winnt folder instead of the windows folder? How can I
restore the cmd.exe to the proper place?

CMD.exe is in your system32 folder. In XP you should have a windows folder
not a winnt folder.

c:\windows\system32\cmd.exe

And are you really running SR1 and SR2 or did you mean SP1 and SP2?

Uhhh I am guessing you tried cmd.exe from the run box. If it doesn't fly
try command.com (I was shocked when it worked on my W2K3 box).

The NTVDM error is a 16 bit WoW error. I think cmd.exe is the 32 bit
version of the command console.

You have spyware. Use Ad-aware and Spybot S&D to start with to get rid
of it. Update and scan in Safe Mode.

You have a trojan\virus\worm.

Update your antivirus software and run a complete system scan.
