cmd.exe window hangs after Telnet timeout

This happened with Windows 2000, and apparently hasn't
been fixed in XP either. There is nothing on the
Microsoft site regarding this. My cmd window often hangs
after a telnet session. Specifically after the remote
device has terminated the connection. The c:\> prompt
appears but then hangs, and I cannot even close the
window, only minimize. All other programs run fine, but
the PC will not shut down from the Start menu. It has to
be powered off by the switch. Please advise. Thanks Nick

This is happening to a few people in my site too. Specially the
network people that telnet into a router and have all this uncloseable
CMD windows. I have use the kill.exe to kill the CMD proccess but the
window remains. Help please.

The answer is NOT to use the built in XP telnet command which must be
run from a command prompt. Instead use Hyperterminal which is
installed in XP Home or Pro. Set Hyperterminal as your default telnet
program first.
