Closing Word files

I've just loaded the new Word and now can't seem to close the last open file
without closing down the program. Is there a way to close the file and keep
the program open?

I assume by "the new Word" you mean Word 2007. Yes, there are several ways.
The painful way is Office Button | Close. Or you can use the keyboard
shortcut Ctrl+W. Or you can add the Close button to your QAT.

Did you load a new Word Program or a new word document. What version of word
are you using?
