How do I add "x" to close open file without closing program?

My word program does not have the "x" to close the file. I do have the "x" to
close the program.

How can I add "x" to close open file, without closing the program?
Thanks!

You can't add an X, but you can type Ctrl-W to close a document
without closing the program.

Word Options > Advanced > Display > Uncheck Show all windows in task bar.
This will put a second 'X' that controls the document closure. It does
however mean that all documents will be displayed in the one window which
may be even less convenient.
