Closing Excel

When I close an Excel program worksheet, it takes from 15
to 30 seconds for the "hour glass" to go a way and the
worksheet to close. It use to take just a few seconds.
Is there something I can do to correct this?

Hi Pete!

Try the standards:

The most likely cause is that a vital area of the system used by Excel
is full of junk and needs clearing out.

Close down and re-open the computer just to make sure that all
installations

are complete.

In Windows 95/98 and ME

Delete all files in C:\Windows\Temp

In Windows NT/2000/XP

Find and Select C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local settings\temp

They are left behind by installing programs but Excel needs the space.

Try again with Excel.

Bloated xlb File

Next is that with pre 2002 versions of Excel there is a tendency for
the toolbar file to bloat in size and eventually this can cause
crashes on opening. It is usually preceded by Excel being noticeably
slower than before in opening and in performance generally. Generally
this means deleting the bloated file.

Next:

Using Start > Search > For Files and folders

Locate the Excel.xlb or Excel10.xlb file. If it is above around 30kb
rename

it Excelxlb.old and move it somewhere. If it's very large you probably
won't

be able to do much with it anyway. This is the toolbar file and Excel
will

create a new one for you.

Now try again.

In addition to Norman's comments, make sure you turn off Outlook's
"Journalling" feature if you have it set to "on".

In Outlook, Tools>Options>Preferences>Journal Options. De-select
Excel.....and any other options if you wish.

Hi Pete!

Just an additional thought to that of Gord and my earlier suggestions
on temp file and xlb file bloat.

There's a possibility that your anti-virus program might be slowing
things down but that usually is a cause of slow opening and saving of
files.

Report back if and when as it is useful for others with the same
problem.

I have often seen it mentioned in this group, about Outlook journalling
causing this problem, and I wonder does anyone use this feature of Outlook
for monitoring their work with spreadsheets - and is there a work-around for
the problem? (though I should probably be asking on an Outlook group).

To me it sounds like a very useful feature, if only it didn't have the
negative side effect.

I personally never use the Journal feature.

Perhaps someone who does will jump in with a pointer ot two.

An Outlook NG would be the best place to post, as you have mentioned.
