closing all windows at once

Not sure your goal. Maybe there is a quicker way or some special
short-cut key ...

I have an icon on the Task Bar which is "Show Desktop". Minimizes
everything and does what it says ... shows desktop. Windows are not
closed. Sorry, but I can't remember how I put that icon there (or even
if I put it there).

Another way is to logout.

May be another way, but I'm not aware.
 
Try Holding down ALT and keep clicking F4 untill they all
go away-almost what you want
