Closing a single IE6 window deletes them all

Intermittent problem: Sometimes when I try to close a single IE6 window
by clicking the X in the upper right corner of the window, all open IE6
windows disappear.

Why does this happen? How can I prevent it?

Try this check in the last tab in internet options search for this that
should do it or it could be a rendering problem with i.e. contact Microsoft!

It is what I refer to as 'slip of the click' which I have done to myself
many times. Open window 1, open window 2 which is only marginally smaller
so
that the x's at the upper right are very close possibly overlapping. If
not
paying close attention you may accidentally click on the wrong 'x'

Are they Explorer windows or definitely IE windows?

Windows Explorer has a keyboard shortcut which would explain this
*if* the window you are closing is a *child* window of all the others
and *if* you are pressing the Shift- key (inadvertently or otherwise.)

SHIFT+click+Close button:
For folders, close the current folder plus all parent folders
How can I prevent it?

Try using Alt-F4 instead?

BTW a less speculative but more mundane hypothesis would
involve malware or incompatible third-party programs which haven't
been properly adapted to the version of IE that you are using
(which if it is the machine you are posting from it appears would be
XPsp2.) In that case I would also infer that you might have
disabled diagnostics for IE. E.g. press Win-Break and check
in System Properties, Error Reporting, Choose Programs
if iexplore.exe is in the exclusion list.
