Cloning WindowsXP

After Michael nudged me into getting my SATA drives working, I decided to
try cloning my Windows XP IDE volume to the new SATA drive ---- without
buying Ghost or the like.

I downloaded a copy of EasyClone Standard for $20 which claimed to be able
to clone XP. What a piece of crap SW --- IMHO. I had several email
communications with their support people to no avail. Good thing they've got
a 30 day money back guarantee,

While searching the web for "Best Windows XP cloning software", I ran
across a brief reference to Seagate's Diskwizard. A basic version of
Diskwizard is packaged with Seagate drives.

By coincidence I happened to have an old Seagate installation disk so I
decided "What the heck!" and gave it a try. THE DANG THING WORKS! And it
did the job in short order while EasyClone took several hours and got no
further than 8% completed before crapping out.

You can download the latest version from Seagate's site here:
http://tinyurl.com/27y63t It will complain if you try to use it on a
non-Seagate HDD ("We won't offer support.") but functions without problem.

Maybe this is old news to many of you but I couldn't find any good leads for
such free SW. Now I can rest!

Cheers

Yes, I've been using it to clone HDs brfore trying Linux - just in case the
partitioning goes wrong. Pity it won't do selected partitions.

Now that's interesting. I'd tried to use it w/o the Maxtor (DW sees Maxtor
as Seagate) and just accepted that it wouldn't work. Actually (can't try
atm as the main HD is the Maxtor) ISTR that DW gave the message then just
closed! What version is yours?

had you bought Acronis Trueimage you would have already had the full blown
version of Diskwizard...............for $20 crap you did buy.

Diskwizard is Trueimage.

Diskwizard is Trueimage.
Perhaps the difference between the two products then is that True Image
actually works.

Well, since my $20 was refunded by EasyClone, I guess I've actually saved
the $49.99 + shipping that Acronis Trueimage would have cost me : ) Or are
you saying there's an advantage to paying $50+ rather than the free copy of
Diskwizard?

The version that I used is 4.9.1.0 with files dated circa 2004. Don't yet
know the newly downloaded version number since I haven't expanded it.

My main (old) drive is also a Maxtor and my SATA destination HDD is an
Hitachi.

Perhaps we should clarify that Diskwizard is NOT Trueimage no more than
Diskwizard is Seagate. Diskimage is copyrighted by Kroll Ontrack Inc. I
guess that means Diskwizard is Kroll Ontrack?

Not sure what two products you're referring to. Diskwizard definitely
works. I assume Trueimage works. EasyClone may work for some people but
it's ugly and definitely didn't work for me.

Thanks. Mines v10.0.0.5018, 2006-ish.
My main (old) drive is also a Maxtor and my SATA destination HDD is an
Hitachi.

My other SATA is a Samsung and the PATA is a Hitachi Deskstar.

I must try again without the Maxtor but, beware, the new version might not
play if there's not a qualifying HDD present!
