When cloning a hard drive, will cloning the boot partition give you all you
need to have the operation system or do you need to also copy the master
boot record?

All imaging software will install an MBR that boots the active partition.

Really depends on whats in the MBR and how the OS partition
is booted. If the MBR does the usual thing and boots the only
active bootable partition visible, that will work fine.

Not necessarily if the MBR is doing something
unusual to boot the OS partition tho.

When I have cloned disks using Norton Ghost, the resulting disk is
a....clone of the original. So, when I clone a dual boot WinME/XP disk, and
replace the old disk with the cloned disk, operation is absolutely and
completely identical in every way. I have done this a bunch of time with
this same result each time.
