Clip Won't Play In The Timeline

D

Some of the files I have don't play in the time line.

If I drag and drop it on the timeline and hit play, the first time the sound
will play but not the video. If I pause it and play again, niether will play.

Nothing is wrong with the file itself because it plays fine outside movie
maker.

How Do I fix this?

To put it as simply as possible, that's because .avi is a "container" not a
"format". The container may contain files formatted in a number of different
formats and not all of them are compatible with Moviemaker or even with each
other.

In an earlier message in this thread I notice you said:

My experience is that sound without video in .avi files means that a codec
is missing. Typically the missing codec is DiVX. Do you have that installed?
If not, you need the (free) DiVX codec. You can get it here:

http://www.divx.com/divx/windows/

You just need the codec--not all the other stuff they try and push onto you.

A useful utility is GSpot, a free utility that analyzes videos and tells you
what codecs you have/need to play them:

http://www.headbands.com/gspot/

In any case, your best bet is to try converting all of the clips to a
single, known format.

Sorry, drkjedi66, John Inzer and Opinicus for intruding this thread like this and for my own use. I have been trying to find the "Post Your Question" button, I'm new here and already pretty frustrated because I couldn't find help for my problems with Movie Maker.... I really hope you don't mind, this is like my last resource.
My Movie Maker has two major problems:
1) extremely slow when initializing and waiting for the MM to be ready.
Same goes for when I upload a film to the computer. A real "hourglass
show"....
2) this is the bad one..... while working on a film or trying to import a
clip that I previously created by adding like 4 or 5 similar clips together,
the Windows Movie Maker all of a sudden "finds" an error and informs me that
it has to be closed....
This happens practically at any given moment, in the case of imported clips
previously edited and put together, sometimes as 4 or 5 parts show up one of
these parts will trigger the error message or the error message shows up
immediately.
Can someone please help me ? Sorry again, guys, for the way I finally made
myself heard by someone.....
Best,
Georg

John, thank you very much for your info, I'll check this weekend and try as you describe. Once I succeed or get totally lost, if you don't mind, I'll let you know.
Best, Georg
