Client Can't Join Domain

N

news

Hi all,

At present I am having problems joining a fifth Win2k Pro Client to the
Domain. At each attempt at joining the domain I am met with the following
message.

"The following error occurred when attempting to join "domain name". "The
network path was not found"

Also it can take current users from 10 to 20 minutes to logon and if they
try to change there own password, the error message below is displayed.

"The network path was not found"

If I log on locally I can see the network via network neighbourhood, and the
other four clients can log on so there is no physical problem.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks

Sounds to me like a DNS problem. If DNS is not correctly configured and
functioning on an Active Directory domain you'll get these kinds of issues.
Check the client PCs to make sure they're pointing to the AD DNS server for
name resolution and make sure you have a properly-functioning DNS server
running an Active Directory-integrated zone.

Thanks Richard, but IPconfig/all shows that all clients are pointing to
10.1.1.254 the DNS Server, And the event viewer on the server say DNS server
has started.

I had a feeling it might be DNS related but I'm not sure what to do next.
Any suggestions?

Are they pointing to it as their primary DNS server?

How does DNS itself look? Does it appear to be getting updates and client
records from Active Directory like it should?

I'm going to defer part of this answer to some of the more experienced
domain guys hereabouts, because I don't know of any way to rename a domain
once it's been created. I know for a fact that if you create a new domain
and merge your old users and computers onto it your users will be
disassociated from their old profiles both on the servers and on the client
PCs.

You might want to try deleting your current forward lookup zone(s) and
creating a new one integrated with Active Directory to see if that will help
with the DNS issues.

One other thing that may help is running through the DNS Server Setup Wizard
once without creating any new zones. On occasion I've seen a DNS server
that looks fine except that when you first open the management console you
see the new DNS server dialog instead of a list of zones. Running through
the wizard without creating anything has kick-started them and gotten them
online properly.
