Clicking on any user name at the Welcome screen does nothing

When Win XP Home starts and I get the Welcome Screen I find that hovering
over a user name will highlight it, but clicking any name results in no
change to the screen and certainly doesn't open Windows. Same thing happens
in Safe Mode.

Most recent action: with computer off, unplugged printer USB cable. Started
computer just fine. Plugged in a thumb drive and XP saw the new hardware and
opened a windows explorer window to browse it. Files were there. Minimized
the windows explorer browser. Then double-clicked My Computer to open
another windows explorer browser. Nothing moved - - - mouse not effective;
control-alt-delete non-functional. Had to hit the hardware reset button on
the computer. Restarting the computer gave me the behavior described in the
first paragraph above. Any ideas?

Try starting to Safe Mode command prompt, if you get in then run this
command:
C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

Thanks to all. It appears the left click wasn't working on the mouse. Still
don't know if it was hardware or driver failure, but suspecting driver as it
was a USB mouse and these problems all started happening with the insertion
of a USB thumb drive.

Suggestion without knowing more and especially why you added the thumb drive
info:

Boot into Safe Mode to the Admin account and log in. From there, perform a
System Restore.
