Clicking AVI files causes crash in Windows Explorer

It's very annoying. Every time I click an AVI file, Windows Explorer
crashes. It appears to happen with some AVI files and not others. In
particular, files from my Canon IXUS/PowerShot camera. I've been
reporting this error to MS a number of times. Is there any solution?
