Now, Excel closes the files in the background first. This means that if you
by mistake types "no" when Excel asks you "Do you want to save ...(the file
in the background)", because you expect to be aked if you want to save the
file you are looking at, than you loose all your changes to the file in the
bakground.
 
I couldn't reproduce this in xl2002.

Each time I had multiple workbooks open, excel prompted me with the
activeworkbook's name (if it needed saving).
