Click on single cell, multiple cells are selected.

We just upgraded to Excel 2007 and Vista on some of our machines at work.
On some sheets when we select one cell multiple cells are selected. This
does not happen every time, but enough to be annoying. Hoe do we fix this?

I guess it's the same as Excel 2003 in which case try tapping F8.

Thanks, but that is not it.
We tried that (earlier suggestion from a different site). F8 was not
selected.
We also ran diagnostics and checked for updates. So far every once in a
while multiple cells "auo-select" with a single click.

Did you find a solution? We are experiencing the same issue on windows xp
machine running Office 2007. It seems to be very random and limited to only
a few different workbooks.

No I have not found a solution. It is random and limited here as well. I
have seen people asking this question for months now. No one has given a
good answer and MS has ignored it.

We have the same problem here with some of our spreadsheets.

when you click on one cell excel highlights the cell you seleted and 3 or
more below it in the same row! editing works as though you only have one cell
selected.

it gets worse though!......

if you zoom in a bit you select more cells with each click - zoom out far
enough and it works fine - you only select one cell with each click - i've
spent some time trawling the net to no avail.

It doesn't seem to affect new wokbooks only ones which have been knocking
around for a while - but i don't feel like starting from scratch with the
hundred or so template files we use here!

I am yet to find any acklowledgment of this issue from microsoft.

F8 and mouse drivers and office 2007 SP1 seem not to make any difference
whatsoever.

Beat up your scroll mouse by tapping on the wheel. Don't be nice. Also,
sometimes the f8 key can give similar results.

Thanks Don,

this problem appears on every machine I try it on with office 2007 -
regardless of hardware differences. this is definately a software issue
related to selection of cells in page layout view with spreadsheets created
using previous versions - as stated in my earlier submissions.

unless every mouse in the company has an objection to working with old files
in page layout view mashing my mouse will probably only make things worse

This is definitely software related and widespread. We are
experiencing the same issue here on spreadsheets created in older
versions and then opened in Excel 2007. I was hoping MS Office Service
Pack 1 might address the issue. Has anyone else tried installing that?
It doesn't seem too promising but I figure its worth a try.

It was very difficult to find this discussion on the topic, much less
anything from Microsoft. Has anyone seen information on this
elsewhere?

I have seen it on other forums - no solution out there by the looks of it - I
have installed SP1 and it doesn't seem to resolve this issue.

Office opens older files in 'Compatability mode' which is a joke. and even
after I convert the files to new 2007 format I still have the same problem.

Hopefully as this is an MS forum someone from MS might actually think about
reading some of this and offering either a solution or a 'we are very sorry
and working to resolve this issue' -

or what is more likely is that they have our licence fees already so now we
can just 'Go Hang' I resent paying huge sums for software prevents me from
selecting the data I want in the view I want. It's not asking too much really
is it? -

I bought the upgrade version and still have 2003 installed on my machine so
using that until MS sort it - or until MS pay me for my time to re-do all our
templates.

This has nothing to do with the mouse hardware. Closing an re-opening
excel sometimes fixes it. If you click a cell and it selects several,
it does it on MouseDown, not on MouseUp. In fact, if you notice it has
selected several cells before you release the mouse button, and you
drag up a bit (if it has selected errant cells below) it will de-
select the others. It seems to me that it has something to do with the
hit-testing internal to excel, and may be from an interaction with the
mouse drivers. But, hey, this is something Microsoft should
acknowledge and deal with! I'm using Logitech mouse and software
4.24.99. Please, others with the same problem, what mouse software and
version are you using?

It doesn't appear to be caused by mouse hardware. I can recreate the
issue on a laptop without a mouse. I have updated with SP1 along with
the latest updates and it hasn't gone away. The only thing I know from
messing around with this is that it appears in Page Layout view. If
you change it to the Normal Layout view then it goes away. I guess I
will have to contact Microsoft on this one.

We are seeing this as well and have found that we can NOT repro it in Normal
view, but it can be reproduced regularly while in Page Layout view.

We have done this with different spreadsheets, after reboots and verifying
key sticking on keyboard or mouse are not the cause.

Any word on a resolution? For now we're going to be telling users to switch
to Normal View when editing documents where this is occurring!

A little more info... it appears that in our cases this problem occurs most
often (if not only) when not only in Page Layout view, but when the
spreadsheet has a footer with multiple lines of text in it.

As bentzb mentioned, this appears to happen on the mousedown event and based
upon how the behavior works if you hold the mouse button in and drag around,
it appears that for some reason the Excel code must have interpretted the
single click as a click and drag. This seems most likely to be being caused
by how cell positions on the screen are most likely being calculated in order
to display correctly while in Page Layout view.
