ClearType

Have activated ClearType for display on a new HP 17" LCD and note a
considerable amount of red vertical lines behind vertical letters (mostly
l,i) almost like some form of ghosting. I've researched a bit through Google
and most of the problems associated with ClearType don't appear related to
my issue. Anyone experience the same problem and if so is there a fix?

Problem goes away if I return to Standard, however I find ClearType a lot
easier on the eyes. Alternatively, can I achieve the same result by playing
with various settings. Incidentally I've checked and no new drivers are
available for my Display Adapter.

I would suggest installing a good AGP video card
rather than using your weak onboard video adapter.

Example of a good video adapter:

Install a graphics card

Have you tried the ClearType Tuner here:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/mouseandkeyboard/download.mspx ?

Thanks Jason

Matter of fact I had downloaded and went through it but didn't notice any
setting changes other than fonts. I'll go back and relook at it.

Thanks for the suggestion Carey but not quite what I had in mind. If you're
suggesting that the only way to "fix" ClearType is to go out and buy a new
video adapter, I'll pass on using it.

Don, I didn't see the tuner but that mouse is an interesting contraption.
Just can't see myself using it to read normal everyday things on the web!

ClearType is not the issue....your weak onboard
video adapter is the issue. That is why I suggested
installing a dedicated AGP video card.

frodo

consider double checking your cleartype tuner settings; ghosting like this
can be caused by improper setting of RGB vs. BGR. 99% of lcd's are RGB,
but a few do require the BGR setting.

and of course, try it w/ cleartype turned off. not everyone agrees that
cleartype makes things better. for max crispness I like cleartype off,
tho I'll admit text is a bit thin/dim...

there are three cleartype tools that I know of...

1) interactive tool:

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/Step1.aspx

2) powertoy:

http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypePowerToy.mspx

3) 3rd party tool:

Sorry, my error. I intended to post the link to PowerToys {which has now
been posted in this thread}. Instead I posted a link I used in reply to
another post.
