I use Firefox (and sometimes, Internet Explorer).

When I start typing a word in a search box, a box appears which
contains a list of words that begin with the same character(s) that
I've typed.. How can I clear these boxes?

Hello Gary,

In Firefox (2.0.0.11);

From the, Tools | Options, menu selection, click on the, Privacy Icon-Tab on the Option
Dialogue Box, then check off (uncheck) the, 'Remember what I enter in forms and the search bar'
check box.

In Internet Explorer 7;

Fromm the Tools | Internet Options, menu button, from the Options Dialogue Box, press the
'Settings' button within the 'AutoComplete' section, and check off what you do not want from there.

Apologies Gary, for the misunderstanding,

In Firefox (2.0.0.11); Tools | Clear Private Data..., you can ensure all or the relevant options
for clearing are checked from the Options dialog.

In Internet Explorer 7; Tools | Internet Options, from this dialog, under Browsing History,
click the Delete Button and choose what you want to clear from there.

- WindPipe (With apologies all over the place)
