I clear out cookies and temp internet files from time to time. When I do
this, I seem to lose the password retention of some websites. Is there a way
of deleting all cookies other than some that I want?

Rob Graham

Yeah, go into the Temporary Internet folder and delete the ones you don't
want there and leave the ones you want to keep.

Navigate to the C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\{username}\COOKIES folder
and manually delete the unwanted items from here.

Open Internet Options where you now delete cookies {Internet Options,
General tab, Internet files section}.
Click on Delete Files to remove temporary internet files. This step
prevents the next step showing both temporary internet files and cookies.
Click on Settings. Then click on View Files {center bottom}. Now you have
a list of your cookies. Use Shift and Ctrl to group select the cookies you
want to delete and delete them.

Don,

Can you explain just what is the difference between the cookies in Temporary
Internet File (some of which appear to be far from "temporary") and those in
the folder Documents and Settings/Local/User/Cookies?

As well as the instructions for manually deleting cookies you could also
download SpyBot. SpyBot is predominantly an anti spyware tool, but, it also
has many other interesting features. One such feature is the ability to
delete usage tracks, i.e. the lists of saved and viewed documents, pictures
etc. and cookies. It can be configured so that only what you want deleted
is deleted. When it comes to cookies there is a section called Ignore
Cookies in which you can select cookies you want the scan to ignore that way
you select all the cookies that appertain to the web sites that require
cookies to sign in etc. and then during the scan only the cookies you don't
want are deleted.

SpyBot is free and a very good anti spyware tool to boot.

I use a third party cookie manager: Cookie Pal. I've used it since Windows 95, and it has
had free updates for every version of Windows since. The first week or so it is
irritating when the dialog box comes up and asks if you want to accept cookies from the
site now, always or never. But after a while when you've visited your most frequented
sites, the dialog boxes come up less and less. Some sites can put more than 100 cookies
on your drive. When you opt for no, or never, Cookie Pal sends back a false positive that
you have accepted the cookie. That works for most sites. The ones that refuse, I make
the decision whether or not I really have to open that page. When you right click the
Cookie Pal icon in the Notification Area (formerly System Tray) and left click Show, you
can manage your cookie filters, delete unwanted cookies etc.. Just being online for about
an hour or so, I moved my mouse arrow over the Cookie Pal icon and the stats say I've
rejected 463 cookies and accepted 27. When I look at my list of cookies, I know which
ones to keep (the ones with password info etc. like msn.hotmail.com, ebay.com etc.). I
wouldn't be without Cookie Pal. You can download a 30 day trial version, and see if you
like it. It only costs $15. Like I wrote, I've been using Cookie Pal since Windows 95,
and find it the easiest way to deal with cookies. You can download the trial version at:
