Clear picture + grainy scan = poor print. HELP

I have uploaded a piece of the photo to:

http://www.bargainmartian.com/scan.jpg

It is a piece of my shirt. I don't want to upload the whole photo
because, well, I don't want everyone and their brother to have a picture
of me.

It's really hard to tell much about a super secret blank area. <g> What scan
resolution? If from like 300 dpi, then it must be an area of the print of
maybe 1/2 inch square?

I dont know what the spots are, but you said it is not detectable in or on the
print itself, so then my guess is that the scanner glass bed needs cleaning.
There is no clue about scale here, but it could be glass cleaner streaks - its
not trivial to remove all of it from the glass, or it might be on the bottom
side. Such streaking is usually fairly obvious if one just looks carefully at
the glass with the scanner lamp on, including looking from down low at the
side. A follow-up cleaning with alcohol might arguably be better, in that it
evaporates well.
