clear persistent history log

J

Jay

I am using IE 6.0 that is installed on my XP (home
edition) machine.

For some reason, I am not able to clear the history to
the previously accessed website.

I clicked the "Clear History" button from Tools -
Internet Options menu. It did not work.

I deleted all files in my Temporary Internet folder but
it didn't work.

Someone suggested that I delete the value of the
following registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Internet Explorer
TypedURLs

Unfortunately, deleting the registry value did not clear
my history.

Does anyone have any idea on how I could clear history in
my IE 6 ?

Thanks
Jay

Hey Jay,

If clearing your history deletes most of the web sites you
visited, but keeps won't delete only today's sites, I may
have a solution to try:

Log off (no need to restart) and log in again. Before you
open the browser to go to any web sites, clear the browser
history. This should also clear your Start/Run
history... Seems there's a KB article on this particular
issue; it shouldn't be too hard to find if you really want
to know why it's happening (something about a file in use
preventing last session's history from getting cleared, if
I recall -- log off/on releases the lock until you browse
again.)

If you've still got a history problem, do a search for
posts containing "history", "temporary internet
files", "cache", or "autocomplete" (in this group). Lots
of good posts have been made that address the issue you're
having. Too many possible solutions to repost them all,
but here's a good quick reference page I happened to
bookmark, that I'm sure was posted by one of the MVPs
active in this group:

http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm

You might try not only deleting all the files that are in
the %UserProfile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
folder, but deleting the folder itself along with its
contents. Further, you may also want to try deleting %
UserProfile%\Local Settings\History folder and its
contents as well.

If I've read others' posts correctly, these folders will
be rebuilt automatically by IE when it starts and finds
them missing...

Good luck.
