Clear Formatting (but not all of it!)

Fran Day

Is there a way to clear the formatting in a document but at the same time
making sure that superscripts and subscripts are not changed?
I spend hours putting back things that I didn't really want to change in the
first place...
Thank you.

Hi Fran,

There are several categories of formatting in Word, but subscripts or
superscripts are removed only if you change the font formatting. For example,
if you clear the paragraph formatting by re-applying the Normal style, your
subscripts, superscripts , and other font formatting should not change. You
can change the font formatting of the selected text by applying a character
style, by pressing Ctrl+spacebar (which clears all font formatting), or by
changing the settings in the Font dialog box. To clear the font formatting
without losing your subscripts and superscripts, select the text to clear
(for example, by pressing Ctrl+A), open the Font dialog box (pressing Ctrl+D
should open this dialog box in most versions of Word), set the font, font
style, and font size to the default values, set the font color to automatic,
set the underlining to none, and clear all the font effect checkboxes except
Superscript and Subscript.

Assuming that the subscript and superscript formatting is applied to less
than 50% of the text in a given paragraph, you should be able to apply the
desired style without losing the formatting. For example, you can (re-)apply
the Normal style by pressing Ctrl+Shift+N.

To add to what Pesach and Stefan have said, if you have Word 2007, you can
use the Style Inspector to remove direct font formatting without removing
character styles. If the superscripts and subscripts are applied with a
character style (such as Footnote Reference for the superscript), then this
approach would be helpful.
