Clean XP Pro install fails copying files

S

Steven

I have an HP Vectra VL8i, P III 450mhz, 350mb RAM, CD-RW,
DVD.

I am trying to do clean XP Pro w/ SP1 install on new 40 GB
drive using XP Pro SP1 boot floppies (CD's are burned from
my MSDN subscription). It dies about 85% along copying
files - the same file each time I try. I have tried
different CD's made on different CD burners - no luck. I
have tested the memory with memtest86 - all good. I've
tried copying the files onto FAT32 disk partition and
install from there using WINNT.EXE onto another or same
partition and it just hangs copying files. Windows NT4
installed fine on this system. Only PCI board is network
board.

Does anybody have an answer for this problem? I know I'm
not the only one because I've seen it posted here many
times by others and no answers - just speculation about
bad CD or bad memory. It sure seems to me like a flaw in
MS Setup program since so many are seeing this. How about
some help from Microsoft?

Thanks.

Try another source disk other than your MSDN one. MSDN versions are full retail versions. Any full retail will work in it's place.

Greetings --

The specific problem you're experiencing is most often caused by
defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of likelihood, either
RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much less frequent
occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause this.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Hardware Compatibility
List: (http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for and sold with Win9x/Me
very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent hardware quality
requirements. This is particularly true of many models in Compaq's
consumer-class Presario product line or HP's consumer-class Pavilion
product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K before it, is quite
sensitive to borderline defective hardware (particularly motherboards,
RAM and hard drives) that will still support Win9x.

How could it possibly be a problem with the software, if you can't
even get the software installed? It's clearly a hardware issue.
