I know it was posted before, but I cant find it through the 1000+ posts
here.

After a clean installation of XP Pro, I have the problem which is the
subject of this post.

Is there a way to change the assigned drive letter without causing boot
problems?

Thanks in advance.

Not reliably and not easily. Your only choice is to disconnect the ZIP
drive during setup and format and reinstall XP.

The Zip drive will always hijack drive C: if connected during the install!
Connect it after the install has completed.

try groups.google.com 'Windows Xp change system drive letter'.

Yes, but it's likely to cause other problems. Much safer, if not easier,
to re-install =without= the external USB drive(s) (which caused the
problem) connected.

Not just boot problems, but problems with the slew of references to E:
that will now be in the registry. If you are not prepared to go
through, changing them all, then either you live with it (And there is
nothing sacrosanct about C) or else start over, and do the install
without the Zip drive connected. In doing so, I would first delete the
existing partition and reboot so there is nothing around to suggest its
existence as a possible E:
