Clean installing windows xp

I'm currently trying to install a clean version of Windows XP, but after all
the files are loaded from the XP-cd and I press enter to continue, it says
that windows can't find any hard disks. I know my hard disk is connected,
turned on and working, because I can boot from it. Do I have to format the
disk prior to installing xp or is there something I haven't thought about?

hi..yeah every time ive done a clean install of xp ive had to formatt the
hdd.well at least the partition where its going to be installed so that the
old xp files etc are totally deleted...you should of got a option to formatt
before you installed xp again unless you are installing it on another
partition of your hdd??

I haven't got the option to choose a partition (got two on the same disk
atm). I don't have any options after I choose to continue with the
installation. When I do it just says that the installation couldn't detect a
hdd (although I know the hdd is working). I guess I just have to format first
then...
