clean install on a new pc

Hi

These are (some of) my problems when I try to install w2k Pro on my new pc:

1. After CD boot, setup stops responding at the very first screen, if the
devices are connected like this:

a. CD-ROM SAMSUNG_SH152A as master on Primary IDE controller
b. DVD-ROM SONY DDU1622 as slave on Primary IDE controller
c. HDD WDC Raptor on SATA-1 channel
d. HDD Maxtor on SATA-2 channel

(The setup stops to a blue screen, no messages, no warnings. not a thing at
all!)

2. The only(?) way to install win2k:

a. Totally unplug DVD-ROM
b. Connect CD-ROM on *secondary* IDE controller
c. Boot from win2k CD and install
d. Shut down the pc (by power button) during last setup screen, about
Network options with the checkbox "each user must have a password to logon",
or something like that.
e. "Move" the CD-ROM on *primary* IDE controller.
f. Re-open the pc and make the Network settings.

(If I don't move the CD-ROM, the pc auto-reboots every time I click the OK
button in the Network options window).

which one should I throw away, my pc or win2k?

Wouldn't it be much simpler just to press <F6> at the beginning of the
installation and then insert the floppy disk containing the drivers for
the SATA controller? Remember, this technology was not in use when
Win2K was developed, so one could hardly expect the Win2K installation
CD to contain the necessary device drivers.

I don't mention anything at all about SATA controller drivers... After all,
I do install win2k (with F6 of course and SATA drivers). using the second of
the above mentioned methods. While with the first method, setup hangs
immediately after CD boot and *before* the screen of "F6".

So, the problem is about the primary IDE controller that, during win2k
setup, it should be "empty" or with a HDD plugged-in (and not an ATAPI
device, as in my case), while the same controller shouldn't be "empty" after
installation, even if the device plugged-in is an ATAPI one.

Well, is there an explanation for this behavior?
