Clean install of XP

J

Josh

I just got a copy of WinXP Pro for my Sony Vaio laptop,
I've already reformatted the harddrive and am looking to
do a clean install. But when I try to install fromt he
CD, it starts copying files but it invariably has
problems with some... I get messages that this file
wasn't copied correctly and that file couldn't be copied
at all. I've run the setup many many times by now and
each time it has problems with different files. There's
not a single file that it has never copied. And of the
times when it gets through enough to start the setup from
the hard drive, it's never gotten all the way through,
I'm guessing because one important file or another wasn't
copied.

What's going on here and how can I fix it?

Sounds like a bad CD or bad CD Drive..

Do you have another CD drive you can hook into your laptop?

Josh,

Possible a damaged CD or maybe a problem with the CD Drive in your laptop.
Contact Sony for support on both issues.

I've seen this happen on systems when booted with a 98 boot disk. The
solution that worked for me was to replace the generic CD drivers on the
disk with GSCDROM.SYS.

Problems copying files or corrupted files during installation are
most often caused by defective or sub-standard hardware; in order of
likelihood, either RAM, the hard drive, or the motherboard. On much
less frequent occasions, a bad CD or defective CD drive can also cause
this.

Have you made sure that your PC's hardware components are capable
of supporting WinXP? This information will be found at the PC's
manufacturer's web site, and on Microsoft's Windows Catalog:
(http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/hcl/default.mspx) Additionally, run
Microsoft WinXP Upgrade Advisor to see if you have any incompatible
hardware components or applications.

You should, before proceeding, take a few minutes to ensure that
there are WinXP device drivers available for all of the machine's
components. There may not be, if the PC was specifically designed for
Win98/Me. Also bear in mind that PCs designed for, sold and run fine
with Win9x/Me very often do not meet WinXP's much more stringent
hardware quality requirements. This is particularly true of many
models in Compaq's consumer-class Presario product line or HP's
consumer-class Pavilion product line. WinXP, like WinNT and Win2K
before it, is quite sensitive to borderline defective or substandard
hardware (particularly motherboards, RAM and hard drives) that will
still support Win9x.

Okay, where do I find this file? And is that a specific
driver for your particular CD-rom?

The file GSCDROM.SYS is a specific driver for a model of Goldstar CDROM
drive.
If you have a look on Google you cab find various download locations,
obviously this should only be used if you have that specific model of CD ROM
