Clean install of XP

Starting from a W98 boot floppy, the installation starts to copy files but
then just stops and waits forever.
Starting from the downloaded XP boot floppies, the install comes up with an
error #7 saying it cannot copy the NTKRNLMP.EX_ file on disk #2 and exit is
the only option. If I boot from the CD it stops saying it cannot find the
end user licence agreement.
I have to do a clean install, any suggestions?

What kind of XP CD do you have? What does it say on the
label and where and when did you get it?

What is the history of the commputer. Was XP ever installed? Have you
changed hard drives? Did you use the correct cables? Added memory? Is the XP
CD a copy or an original? If the CD is not bad, there is a hardware conflct.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

Can you explain why it is that you are starting to install XP using DOS and a
Win 98 start disk?

XP installation CD's are bootable and have all the prerequisitie system tool
for startup and successful installation.

Many who try with an XP start diskette forget to copy SMARTDRV.EXE onto the
floppy and also forget to load this prior to launching winnt.exe.

So, just use the XP CD and if, for some reason you are attempting to
reinstall from the I386 folder in a partition of the hard drive, make sure
you load SMARTDRV.EXE.

SMARTDRV.EXE is not needed when installing from a flat on the hard drive. It
is necessary when installing from the i386 folder on the CD.
